Maktub is an alchemist term (Arabic word) which literally means: 'it is written'. From mystical point of view, it points to the fact that whatever happens is already known to the 'One'. It signifies that Destiny exists. It points finger to the fact that everything is already known to God.
Maktub can be seen as a mystical Adagio. The dynamics go mostly from piano to pianissimo; the atmosphere is languid; the 'tonality' is minor but gradually a certain 'Arabic touch' can be felt when a modal scale emerges.
Maktub is a reflection upon the temporaryness of our earthly life. This theme, inspired by Goethe's poem cycle 'West-Östlicher Divan', was also worked out in my 1st Symphony: Beginning (birth) and Ending (death) are the same (Goethe: 'Anfang und Ende immer fort dasselbe).
But what is in between is already known: Maktub
