Cello Biënnale Amsterdam
Cello Biënnale Amsterdam 2022

The Cello Biennale Amsterdam is a ten-day international music festival based around the cello. Under the direction of assistant conductor Giuseppe Mengoli, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra (Nederlands Kamerorkest) will play a world premiere by Willem Jeths. Commissioned by the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and the Cello Biennale, he composed Cello Concerto No.2 'Nell'Oltretomba'. Soloist is the German cellist Leonard Elschenbroich. Victor Julien-Laferrière is the soloist in Shostakovich's virtuoso Cello Concerto.

Willem Jeths – composer laureate of the Netherlands from 2014 to 2016 – wrote his first cello concerto in 1999 for Frances-Marie Uitti. Nell’Oltretomba is his second cello concerto, composed specially for this year’s Cello Biennale (9th Edition). It will be performed by Leonard Elschenbroich*.

The resounding winner of the first Queen Elisabeth Competition dedicated to the cello (Brussels, 2017), Victor Julien-Laferrière, will be performing Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No.1.

*Leonard Elschenbroich replaces Johannes Moser, who had to cancel due to illness.
