Brezza is the Italian word for “breeze.” The piece is in a single movement; it begins as if emerging out of nothing and, at the end, disappears back into nothingness. In the time between, a musical idea introduced at the beginning is continuously developed. This idea has a modal character and undergoes various rhythmic transformations, so that the same material is “spoken” in different ways each time. In Brezza, static modality is set against fluid, shifting rhythm. Multiphonics are used occasionally; a flute with open keys is required to perform this piece. — Willem Jeths
