Bella Figura is based on the use of the four open strings, played in all possible combinations of large double stops, alternating with subtle quarter-tone fluctuations. It is a game of extremes, of different colour possibilities of the cello.
A wide range of playing techniques is required, from very sul ponticello to forceful scratch tones. The work is a focused exploration of sound and bowing—a study of the cello itself, its character, and its bella figura. — Willem Jeths
